Guardian Home…...what is it? What does it involve and is it right for my family?

At Kootenay Bernedoodles we believe in giving our dogs the best life possible. When raising and sharing your life with our four legged friend we think there is only so much love and attention in the home. So we find the most wonderful homes to care for our dogs while they are in our breeding program and once that process is complete. The dog ownership is transferred to you, and she/he stays in your home for the rest of their lives.

How does it work?

We will either take a puppy from a current litter or a new addition to our breeding program and place her with you. She will have her first and second shots, and a microchip. From there it is your responsibility to keep the dog well socialized, trained, exercised, and fed a healthy high quality food. Any veterinarian costs regarding breeding will be covered by Kootenay Bernedoodles, while incidental and emergency vet visits are the responsibility of the Guardian Home. During the breeding period any female, once bred will come to live with us to be whelped (giving birth) and remain with us until the puppies go to their forever home. The breeding period typically runs from 2 years to 4 years, at which point the female will be spayed and ownership will be transferred 100% to the Guardian Home.

So you’ve brought her home, what’s next?

At this point, we will have walked you through the steps of acclimatizing the puppy to her new surroundings. It will be a big change for her so we expect you to take some time to have your family bond with her. Throughout her first year it will be necessary to have visits both in your home and ours, so she can be comfortable around us, our space, and our dogs. We would also like her to come and stay with us for at least a week in her first year, so we may further bond and get to know her(also a good time if you want to get away). When it comes to understanding the canine estrus cycle, we will help you understand and to look for the signs of an upcoming heat, as well as what to do, what to avoid, and what your responsibilities are for the next 2 weeks.

Who can be a Guardian Home?

We look for caring families and couples. We prefer them to be within a reasonable driving distance to mid island Vancouver Island. We also require a secure area to run at your home, a veterinarian within 30 minutes, and a loving, caring environment inside the home. These furry family members play an important role in Kootenay Bernedoodles, they are our future and will bring forth the joy and happiness that our families need.

What does it cost to be a Guardian Home?

The costs are those that one would have raising their own puppy. Food, training, and vet visits. We will organize and pay for any Veterinary costs associated with breeding. While the Guardian Home is responsible for any emergency visits and non breeding related costs. We will however take a $1000 deposit that will be returned to the Guardian Family once she has completed the program and is spayed. From there on the ownership of the dog becomes yours, and all costs related.
